Instrumental assessments are key when it comes to accurate diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia. Research shows that dysphagia is over-diagnosed during a clinical bedside exam, resulting in patients unnecessarily being placed on restrictive diets and thickened liquids.
We don't have X-ray vision. We can't see what is happening without an instrumental assessment. We need to stop perpetuating the myth that we can and start advocating for our patients. They deserve better.
